Northeast Ohio's Brilliant Gem - Cleveland MetroParks' Emerald Necklace!
Greetings everyone and welcome to another edition of Mighty Line Minute! Today we'll be talking about the Cleveland MetroParks, and what's known as "The Emerald Necklace" throughout Northern Ohio. Stay tuned.
Cleveland MetroParks consists of an immense network of green space that surrounds the Greater Cleveland area. It's always played a crucial role in the quality of life. Beyond that, people come to visit quite often. And the area known as "The Emerald Necklace" is due to its green belt that surrounds this Greater Cleveland area.
The park system consists of over 18,000 acres that is spread over 18 Reservations. It has a rich history in the region, that allows for a great appreciation for conservation, recreation, and community engagement.
The origins of the Cleveland MetroParks date back to the late 19th century and early 20th centuries.
That was a time of rapid industrialization and urbanization.
As Cleveland emerged as a manufacturing powerhouse, citizens became concerned about environmental degradation and the loss of natural spaces.
In 1896, a public park system was established by the City of Cleveland's newly created Park Board.
Their vision was to create green space that was accessible to all citizens, providing opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature. By 1917, ideas were being proposed for an extensive park system that surrounded the city.
And in 1923, Engineer William A Stinchcomb was appointed as the Director of the Park District. Stinchcomb would soon become the Chief Architect of what would eventually become known as
Cleveland's "Emerald Necklace."
You'll certainly want to follow the upcoming episodes of Mighty Line Minute. I'll be covering Cleveland MetroParks and their various reservations.
But most importantly, my favorite areas for recreation and solitude. Take care, spend some time in the fresh air, and I'll look forward to seeing you on the next edition of Mighty Line Minute!
