Top 10 Personal Safety Considerations While Traveling

Greetings everyone, and welcome to another edition of Mighty Line Minute! Here at Mighty Line, we’ve been traveling quite a bit of late. So, being the safety product company that we are, and with the Spring travel season ahead, we’re covering the “Top 10 Personal Safety Considerations While Traveling.” While this top 10 list certainly won’t include all that is possible to assure your personal safety and security, it will serve as a useful checklist and reminder before hitting the road or the skies. So, let’s see how and whether your future travel plans “tic” the boxes against the following, essential travel tips!

Number 1 is Health & Hygiene: First and foremost, be sure to carry necessary medications and prescriptions, and ensure that your vaccinations are up to date. Pack non-perishable snacks and use sanitizing wipes to clean hands and airline tray tables. Stay hydrated and exercise your legs while flying. Be mindful of food and water safety to avoid illness. Check for cleanliness and any potential for infestations in your destination rooms. If traveling internationally, consider carrying Pepto-Bismol® tablets and/or prescription treatments in the event of any food-related G I issues.

Number 2, Packing Essentials: Pack lightly, tightly, and wisely. Carry only what you need. When flying, avoid checking baggage, when possible, to ensure efficient travel. Use Velcro®-style straps to keep electronic charging cables and cords organized.

Number 3, Safety and First Aid: Carry a small first-aid kit that includes Tylenol®, Band-Aids®, Steri-Strips®, gauze, Vaseline®, and medical tape. Pack Mighty Line® photoluminescent tape to wrap around lower bedframe posts while sleeping in unfamiliar rooms. While traveling internationally, prepare a list of special dietary requirements in the local language to avoid any possibility of confusion.

Number 4, Travel Insurance: Ensure that you are covered by suitable medical and travel insurance, especially while traveling internationally. Optional coverages such as trip cancellation, lost luggage, property theft, and vehicle damage may be available with certain credit cards, or through other programs.

Number 5, Personal Identification: Keep copies of critical documents such as your driver’s license, passport, tickets, and credit cards in the event of loss or theft. If traveling with a passport, best to keep it securely on your person such as in a front pocket when leaving your room.

Number 6, Inspect the Property: Inspect the rental property or hotel room for hazards such as unlocked doors or windows. Check overall cleanliness, and where possible, test rental property smoke detectors and CO alarms. Use provided door and window security features such as deadbolts or electronic locks. Familiarize yourself with escape routes, fire extinguisher locations, and fire alarm pull stations to activate building evacuation alarms. Become familiar with planned exit routes, especially involving stairwells. For BnBs, read guest reviews carefully and verify the host's credentials prior to booking. Look for indications of past safety concerns or property issues.

Number 7, Emergency Connections: Keep local emergency contacts and numbers with you. When traveling internationally, have your country’s embassy or consulate contact information readily available. Always keep your cell phone charged and available to receive (or send) emergency notifications. Share your daily itinerary with family or friends for safety.

Number 8, Financial Security: Use a credit card rather than cash or checks and review its daily activity. Notify your bank ahead of planned travel, especially international, that will deviate from your normal routine. Keep valuables in a secure location or reputable safe.

Number 9, Local Safety Awareness: Research your destination for personal safety and security concerns. Double-check safe walking, biking, and travel routes with trusted locals. And follow your instincts – if you feel uncomfortable, avoid the location or route.

And finally, number 10 is Transport Safety: Choose reputable transportation services that you have researched and confirmed. Always wear safety belts and follow your travel route on your own phone when relying on other drivers. Do not enter a vehicle that makes you feel uncomfortable. If a problem arises, contact someone immediately and quickly determine how to exit the vehicle safely.

So, there you have it, our safety shortlist that serves as a reminder for your personal safety and security while traveling. Take the time to enhance this "Top 10" list to best suit your specific travel plans, especially when they involve your co-workers, friends, or loved ones.
