S2 E17 Ten Travel Hacks You Haven't Thought About

Greetings everyone, and welcome to another edition of Mighty Line Minute! In our most recent podcast, Series 2 Episode 16, we discussed the “Top 10 Personal Safety Considerations While Traveling.” Today we’ll cover even more that you need to know. We’ve entitled this one, “Ten Travel Hacks You Haven’t Thought About,” so let’s get started!

Number 1. Select hotels that are fully-sprinklered and whose parent companies are recognized as life-safety leaders. That means clean rooms, up-to-date fire detection and evacuation alarm systems and established safe egress routes and exit travel maps. Marriott International, for example, has been a well-established leader in fire protection and life-safety for its guests and properties. Many other large names are also similarly recognized today.

Number 2. For BnB life-safety and security, carefully discern the host’s commitment to fire and life-safety. This is especially important if guests – especially children - will be occupying upper floors or be exposed to unique hazards such as low upper floor window heights, gas stoves and swimming pools. Be certain to test smoke and CO detectors, as well as the location’s security features. Develop a personal safety and security plan for the property that includes the local area and discuss it with all guests.

Number 3. When in high-risk or busy areas, and while traveling to or attending events, carry a second wallet with you that includes cash and a fake personal address. Include an outdated credit card that avoids your middle name. Keep your principal wallet lean and thin, and ideally, located in a hidden pocket. When traveling internationally, enroll in the U.S. Department of State’s "Smart Traveler Enrollment Program." This program allows embassies and consulates to notify you immediately of any real-time emergencies.

Number 4. Hide some emergency cash in an empty sunscreen bottle.

Number 5. On extended stays, wash socks and t-shirts in the sink using hotel shampoo & conditioner, rinse well, wring and hang-dry from pant hangers. Note: NEVER hang anything from ceiling or wall-mounted fire sprinklers!!

Number 6. Take and wear your old, tired or worn-out clothing on long trips. Recycle or dispose of them while at your destination. This will free-up luggage space for new purchases and will lighten your return load. There’s nothing better than unloading those worn socks, underthings and campy shirts you’ve been eager to replace. So, enjoy shopping at a new destination!

Number 7. Travel to your destination with old or broken luggage, donate or dispose upon arrival, then enjoy shopping for your new bag while at your destination. Look for luggage that carries a 5-year warranty. If the luggage can be recycled, ask the hotel if they can recycle it for you.

Number 8. Purchase only hard, flexible-shell, lightweight travel luggage vs. soft fabrics to avoid bedbugs catching a ride. Always keep luggage closed during your stay.

Number 9. Consider shopping for shoes when traveling abroad. EU shoe sizes often do not correlate with US sizes. For example, male Ecco EU 47’s may be a better fit than another manufacturer’s US 13. It's also a great time to break in new shoes that may appear in some photos!

And finally, Number 10. While experienced travelers may know of this company, PacSafe.com provides an excellent selection of anti-theft slings, backpacks, bags and helpful technology options for use on your luggage or on your person.

And that’s a wrap for today’s Mighty Line Minute on “Ten Travel Hacks You Haven't Thought About!” And if your travel plans happen to include visiting a warehouse, manufacturing or commercial location, be mindful. It’s possible that their operation could be significantly enhanced and made safer with the use of Mighty Line’s floor signs or with Mighty Line Tape – “The Only Durable Stripe” for aisleway or warehouse storage delineation!

Take care, be safe, and we’ll see you on our next edition of Mighty Line Minute!
