Memorial Day - A Time for Reflection, Remembrance, and Resolve

Greetings everyone, and welcome to another edition of Mighty Line Minute. This is Dave.

And on this Memorial Day, we take time to honor, mourn, and remember the men and women of our military who died while serving their country. It is a solemn day of reflection and gratitude.

We honor the ultimate sacrifice made by service members who sought to protect our nation's freedoms and values, and often from those who served abroad.

Memorial Day is also a time to spend with family and friends, to hit the road, to enjoy peaceful spaces, and even to seek solitude. It is a time to find peace somewhere, somehow.

In the earliest wars of our country, non-combat deaths outnumbered combat-related fatalities. Nearly 70% of combatant deaths during the American Revolutionary War were due to disease, starvation and exposure, often as a result of harsh imprisonment aboard ships.

Nearly two-thirds of the roughly 750,000 deaths during the Civil War were caused by disease, infection, and inadequate medical care. Even in World War Two, roughly 25 to 30% of approximately 415,000 American war-related deaths were from non-combat causes.

This is certainly not to diminish the heroic efforts of those who died in combat. Memorial Day honors the nearly 1.4 million Americans who died in military service, particularly during wartime. But it also recognizes those service members who died while in uniform, regardless of whether their deaths occurred in wartime.

As sons and daughters, and in many cases as parents, each individual's contribution and sacrifice ultimately served to make the world a better and safer place.

Every human loss in war is a tragedy. This Memorial Day weekend let us find comfort in knowing there is much more for which we can be grateful. Have a thoughtful and meaningful Memorial Day and its weekend.

Let us hope and pray that one day all nations and their leaders will come to more fully understand the true costs and tragedies of war.

May we each do our part to help make the world a better and safer place for generations to come. Have a safe day.
