Greetings everyone, and welcome to another edition of Mighty Line Minute! We're continuing our series this month on music, innovation, and safety.
Today's episode is about music in the workplace, and whether it can boost—or undermine—safety and productivity.
I once visited a light manufacturing plant in the UK where British rock played daily. It wasn’t just the genre that stood out, but how much the employees seemed to enjoy the selection. I mean, who doesn’t like Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve?
In many workplaces today, there may not be formal corporate guidance on music. As a result, decisions about what gets played—and how loudly—are often made locally. This can lead to music that’s too loud, inappropriate, or simply distracting. Employees might be reluctant to voice their discomfort, especially if they feel like the odd one out.
When music competes with background noise, it can make it even harder to concentrate, communicate, and stay productive. And what about individuals who are noise-sensitive or looking to protect their hearing?
Ever noticed how consistently good Chipotle’s playlists are? That’s no accident—they have a full-time music curator who crafts an evolving mix of fresh, lesser-known tracks. So, it begs the question: should warehouse environments—and other workplaces—take a similar approach? Could they benefit from curated playlists or systems that balance morale with safety and focus?
Music affects mood, attention, and safety. A poor selection—whether it's the genre or the volume—can reduce productivity, contribute to turnover, and increase the risk of accidents due to distraction or lack of focus.
The best workplaces consider the full soundscape. They choose music carefully, manage volume, work with employees and design environments where sound supports—not hinders—work. Most importantly, workers are involved in the process, and its use is carefully discerned.
Some companies are even embedding music into their training and safety content. This boosts engagement and improves retention of key information.
From the line to the dock, music is proving itself more than entertainment. It’s a tool for focus, stress relief, and culture—when used with care.
This has been Dave for Mighty Line Minute. Thanks for listening. Let’s keep the conversation—and the good vibes—flowing.
Have a safe and productive day! And we'll see you over at MightyLineTape.com, producers of "The World's Most Durable Stripe!"
