Greetings—Dave here for Mighty Line Minute. In this second week of our new podcast, we’re talking about life safety. On January 2nd, 2024, Japan Airlines Flight #516 collided with a Coast Guard aircraft at Tokyo International Airport. Five people aboard the smaller plane died, but all 379 passengers and crew escaped the Airbus.

How did they evacuate safely? The National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, publishes a widely adopted fire and life safety code. NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, applies to nearly every type of workplace. It began with a 1912 publication about exit drills and now covers most building occupancies.

A past tragedy reshaped Japan Airlines’ approach to safety. In 1985, 520 of the 524 people aboard Flight #123 died, prompting stronger safety awareness, education, and preparedness. That commitment remains central to the airline. The Flight 516 investigation illustrated how emergency planning and clear egress procedures helped everyone aboard the Airbus escape.
